Ely, Missouri facts for kids
Ely is a small place in Marion County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually looked after by the county government.
The Story of Ely
Ely started to grow in the late 1850s. This was a time when railroads were very important for travel and moving goods. The community began when a railroad line was built through that area.
The name "Ely" comes from a person named Dr. Ezra Stiles Ely. He was a reverend, which means he was a leader in a church, and he came from Pennsylvania.
A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was opened in Ely in 1874. It was first called "Ely Station." Later, in 1883, its name was changed to simply "Ely." The post office served the community for many years before it finally closed down in 1937.
