Ely is a small, quiet place in Lee County, Virginia, in the United States. It's what we call an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and people living together, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county government.
A Look Back at Ely
Early Days and the Post Office
Ely has a bit of history, even though it's a small place today. One of the first people to settle here was a man named Robert Ely. The community was likely named after him.
A long time ago, in 1890, a post office was opened in Ely. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long. It closed just one year later, in 1891.
