The Story of Ely College
Ely College has an interesting history, starting with two different schools. Over time, these schools joined together to form the college we know today.
How the School Began
In 1957, the Ely High School for Girls moved to a new, larger site. Around the same time, St Audrey's Infant School was built close by. Later, in 1969, a new school called Needham's County Secondary School was built next to the High School. This was made possible by a gift from the Catherine Needham Foundation.
In September 1972, Ely High School and Needham's Secondary Modern School joined together. They became the City of Ely College. This change was part of a move towards "comprehensive education" in Ely. This means schools started teaching students of all abilities together. A special college for older students, called a VIth Form College, was also set up. It was for students from Ely and nearby towns.
Later, the school was known as the City of Ely Community College. In 2011, its name was changed to Ely College.
Becoming an Academy
In 2010, the leaders of Ely College decided to become a "Foundation" school. Then, in 2011, they asked to become an "Academy." An academy is a school that gets money directly from the government. It has more freedom over how it runs.
Ely College joined the CfBT Schools Trust in January 2012. This trust was formed by CfBT, a big charity focused on education. However, in September 2016, Ely College joined a different group of schools called CMAT instead.
CMAT and the House System
CMAT stands for Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust. It's a group of schools that work together. CMAT was started in 2011. It helps schools like Ely College to become academies and improve.
Ely College uses a special "House System." The school is divided into five 'Houses'. Each House has about 250 students, 12 tutor groups, and 30 staff members.
What are the Houses?
Each House looks after the students' well-being and helps them make progress. Every House has its own unique identity. However, they all follow the same rules and systems.
The Houses are named after important historical figures:
- Etheldreda (after Saint Etheldreda)
- Scott (after explorer Robert Falcon Scott)
- Franklin (after scientist Rosalind Franklin)
- Turing (after mathematician Alan Turing)
- Seacole (after nurse Mary Seacole)
Many schools in the CMAT group use this House System. It helps create a smaller, more supportive community within a large school.
Bishop Laney Sixth Form
Bishop Laney is a "Sixth Form" college in Ely. A Sixth Form is where students go after finishing their main secondary school education. It's for students aged 16 to 18. Bishop Laney shares some buildings with Ely College.
What Bishop Laney Offers
Bishop Laney is also part of the CMAT group of schools. It works closely with Ely College and Soham Village College.
Students at Bishop Laney can study for traditional A-Level courses. They can also take Level 2 and 3 Technical Awards. These awards focus on practical skills for different jobs. Bishop Laney even works with Norwich City Football Club. They offer a football course that students can take alongside their other studies. The Sixth Form and Ely College often do activities together.
Ofsted Reports
Ofsted is a government body in England. It inspects schools to check how well they are doing. They give schools a rating.
- In 2013, Ofsted rated Ely College as 'Good'. This means the school was doing well.
- In 2015, Ofsted rated Ely College as 'Inadequate'. This meant the school needed to make big improvements.
- In 2019, Ofsted rated Ely College as 'Good' again. They also said the leadership and management were 'Outstanding'. This shows the school had improved a lot.
