Ely College is a secondary school located in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England. It is an academy school, which means it is funded directly by the government and is not controlled by the local council. The college teaches students from ages 11 to 18.

History of Ely College

How Ely College Started

In 1957, Ely High School for Girls moved to a large new site on Downham Road. A nearby school, St Audrey's Infant School, was built around the same time. Later, in 1969, a special donation helped create Needham's County Secondary School next to the High School. This donation came from the Catherine Needham Foundation.

Merging Schools and New Names

In September 1972, Ely High School and Needham's Secondary Modern School joined together. They became the City of Ely College. This was part of a change to a new education system in Ely. The college used the old Needham's building. A separate Sixth Form College was also set up in the former Girls' High School building. This Sixth Form was for older students from Ely and nearby towns like Soham and Littleport. Later, the school was known as the City of Ely Community College. In 2011, its name was changed to Ely College.

Becoming an Academy

In September 2010, the school's leaders decided to become a Foundation school. This gave them more control over how the school was run. In 2011, they asked to become an Academy. They planned to join the CfBT Schools Trust, a group of academies. Ely College officially became part of this Trust in January 2012. However, in September 2016, the college joined a different group of schools called CMAT.

Meridian Trust and House System

What is Meridian Trust?

CMAT, now known as the Meridian Trust, was first formed in 2011. It started as Cambridge Meridian Education Trust (CMET) in 2009. The trust aimed to support new schools, especially in a new town called Northstowe. Swavesey Village College was the first school to join the trust. In March 2011, CMET became Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT). This allowed Swavesey Village College to become an academy and help other schools do the same. In April 2022, the trust changed its name to the 'Meridian Trust'. It now includes 28 schools across Cambridgeshire, Bedford, and Lincolnshire.

How Houses Work at Ely College

Ely College is organized into five 'Houses'. Each House has about 250 students, 12 tutor groups, and 30 staff members. The Houses help look after students and make sure they are doing well in their studies. Each House has its own identity, but they all follow the same rules and systems.

The Houses are named after important people:

  • Etheldreda (after Saint Etheldreda)
  • Scott (after explorer Robert Scott)
  • Franklin (after scientist Rosalind Franklin)
  • Turing (after mathematician Alan Turing)
  • Seacole (after nurse Mary Seacole)

This House system is used in many schools that are part of the Meridian Trust.

House Colors and Codes

Each House has a special color that is shown on its logo. Students wear ties and PE uniforms that match their House color. This helps everyone know which House they belong to. Also, each form group has a unique code. This code is based on their form tutor's teacher code and the first two letters of their House name.

  • Etheldreda (Et) - Yellow
  • Franklin (Fr) - Green
  • Scott (Sc) - Red
  • Seacole (Se) - Purple
  • Turing (Tu) - Blue

Bishop Laney Sixth Form

About Bishop Laney

Bishop Laney is a Sixth Form college in Ely. It shares some buildings with Ely College. It is named after Bishop Laney, who lived from 1590 to 1674. Bishop Laney is also part of the Meridian Trust. It works together with Ely College and Soham Village College.

Courses and Activities

The Sixth Form offers different types of courses. These include traditional A-Level courses and technical awards. It also has a special football course in partnership with Norwich City Football Club. Students can take this course along with their other studies. Bishop Laney and Ely College often do activities together.

New Facilities

Recently, Bishop Laney opened its newly improved Needhams Tower facility. This building has four stories and is used by the Sixth Form. They received £5 million in funding from the government to help pay for these improvements.
