Building a Place to Worship
The community of Montra was first planned in 1849. However, it took five years for any buildings to be constructed there. The St. Emanuel's Lutheran Church group started in a Montra storeroom in 1860. It began with sixteen families.
The congregation used this storeroom for worship. Their first church building was finished in the fall of 1862. This building was on the eastern edge of the community. It was about 40 feet long and 30 feet wide. The cost to build it was $700.
A New Beginning
Sadly, a fire destroyed the first church in 1874. This left the congregation without a home for several months. A new church was built on the same spot during the summer of 1875. Like the first one, this new church was made of wood.
The second church was larger, measuring 50 feet long and 40 feet wide. It cost $1,800 to build. The church was officially opened in October 1875. It stands on a strong stone foundation. The white wooden building has a tall steeple on top. There are five windows on each side of the church.
Recognized for its History
In 1982, the Emanuel Lutheran Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places that are important to American history. Being on this list means the church has played a big part in the area's past.
Today, Emanuel is still an active church. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In 2019, the church had 190 members. About 42 people attended Sunday worship services on average.
