The Emanuel Lutheran Church of Montra is an old and important church building. It is located in a small community called Montra, in Ohio, United States. This church is special because it's the second building used by its church group. It stands in Jackson Township, which is part of Shelby County.

A Look Back at the Church's Story

How the Church Began

The community of Montra was first planned in 1849. However, it took five years for the first buildings to be constructed there. The St. Emanuel's Lutheran Church group started in 1860. They first met in a storeroom in Montra. Sixteen families were part of this original church group.

The First Church Building

The church group used the storeroom until their first church building was ready. This first church was completed in the fall of 1862. It was built on the eastern edge of the Montra community. The building was about 40 feet long and 30 feet wide. It cost around $700 to build.

Building the Current Church

Sadly, a fire destroyed the first church building in 1874. This left the church group without a home for several months. A new church was built in the summer of 1875. It was constructed on the same spot where the old one stood.

The new church was made of wood, just like the first one. It was larger, measuring 50 feet long and 40 feet wide. This second building cost about $1,800 to complete. It was officially opened and dedicated in October 1875. The church stands on a strong stone base. It is a white wooden building with a tall steeple on top. There are five windows on each side of the church.

A Special Historic Place

In 1982, the Emanuel Lutheran Church was recognized as a very important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means the church has played a significant role in American history.

Today, Emanuel Lutheran Church is still an active church. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In 2019, the church had 190 members. On average, about 42 people attended Sunday worship services.
