The Emberá-Wounaan is a special area in eastern Panama that belongs to indigenous (native) people. It's called a comarca indígena, which means "indigenous territory." This area was officially created on November 8, 1983. It was formed from parts of the old Chepigana and Pinogana districts in the Darién Province.
The capital city of Emberá-Wounaan is Unión Chocó. One interesting fact about this territory is that it's made up of two separate parts that don't touch each other.
How the Territory is Organized
The Emberá-Wounaan Comarca is divided into smaller sections to help manage it. It has 2 main districts and 5 corregimientos, which are like smaller subdivisions. The eastern part of the territory is called Cemaco, and the western part is called Sambú.
