The Story of the Emblem
The first version of Adjara's emblem appeared in 1922. This happened when the First Congress of Soviets of the ASSR of Adjara met. They held their meeting from January 10 to January 14, 1922. During this time, they created the first set of rules, called the Constitution, for Adjara. The emblem was shown in the printed version of this 1922 Constitution.
Changes to the Emblem
The emblem of Adjara changed a few times over the years. These changes were written down in the region's Constitution.
Second Version (1937)
A new Constitution for the Adjar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was approved on October 25, 1937. This new set of rules described the emblem in detail.
The emblem had a round red background. At the top, there was a bright five-pointed star with rays shining across the whole symbol. At the bottom, there was a blue snowy mountain range. On the right side, there were golden wheat stalks. On the left side, there were golden grapevines. The ends of the wheat and grapevines were woven together at the bottom of the mountain.
In the middle of the emblem, there was a hammer and sickle. This symbol represented workers and farmers. The hammer and sickle rested on the bright star at the top and the mountain at the bottom. It also touched the wheat and grapevines on the sides.
Around the edge of the emblem, there was a message in both Georgian and Russian languages. It said: "Workers of all countries, unite!" It also said "Georgian SSR." Below the "Georgian SSR" text, in smaller letters, it added "Adjara ASSR" in both languages. The entire emblem was surrounded by a decorative pattern in the Georgian style.
Third Version (1978)
In 1978, Adjara adopted another new Constitution. After this, a small change was made to the emblem. The words "Adjara ASSR" in the Georgian language were moved. They were now placed against the background of the mountains in the emblem.
