What Happens in the Story?
Emerald Star follows the adventures of Hetty Feather. She is looking for her long-lost father.
Hetty Searches for Her Family
Hetty arrives in Monksby, her mother's old village. She hopes to find her father there. Many people in the village are not very friendly. It is hard for Hetty to find anyone who knew her mother, Ida.
Finally, she finds her father, Bobbie Waters. He is very emotional. He feels bad for leaving Hetty's mother. He also never knew he had a daughter. Bobbie welcomes Hetty into his family. He tells Hetty her mother's real name was Evie.
However, Bobbie already has a family. He is married to Katherine. Hetty and Katherine do not get along well. Bobbie and Katherine have two children, Mina and Ezra. They are also not very happy about Hetty joining their family. Katherine doubts if Hetty is really Bobbie's daughter. This is because Hetty only knew her mother by a nickname.
Hetty tries to be friends with her half-siblings. But it is hard for her to fit into the fishing community of Monksby. She writes to her friend, Sarah Smith. Sarah was a governor at the Foundling Hospital. Hetty asks her to confirm her mother's real name. Miss Smith writes back soon. She confirms Hetty's mother's name. This proves Hetty is Bobbie's daughter.
Hetty then learns she has more family in Monksby. Her mother's father, Samuel, lives there. Hetty decides to visit him. Samuel is not kind to Hetty. He tells her to leave his property. Hetty feels like she does not belong in Monksby. Soon after, she gets a letter from Jem. He tells her that her foster father has passed away. Hetty decides to leave Monksby to go to the funeral.
Life with Jem and the Circus
Hetty feels like she does not truly belong with her foster family either. But Jem welcomes her warmly. She also becomes friends with Janet, Jem's childhood friend. After the funeral, Hetty lives with Jem. She helps take care of their mother, who is disabled. Jem works on the farm.
Later, Gideon, Hetty's other foster brother, comes home from the Army. He has lost an eye. Hetty starts to get tired of doing the same things every day. Jem and Hetty spend Christmas with Janet's family. Hetty finds Janet's diary. She discovers that Janet is in love with Jem.
The circus returns to town. Hetty is very excited. She reunites with Madame Adeline, who she admired as a child. Hetty also meets a young girl named Diamond. Diamond is scared of her master, Beppo, who treats her very badly. Hetty falls in love with the circus all over again. She decides to join the circus as the ringmaster. After saying a final goodbye to Jem, Hetty leaves to start her new life.
