About the Emerald Cascader
Scientists have found different types of Zygonyx iris dragonflies, sometimes called subspecies, across various places. These might just be slight differences based on where they live, or they could be true subspecies.
What Does It Look Like?
The emerald cascader is a beautiful dragonfly with a shiny, dark metallic blue body. It has brown eyes and a yellow stripe on its chest (called the thorax). Its belly (abdomen) is black, but the first few parts have bright yellow sides. There's also a yellow line down the middle of its back on some segments, and a big yellow spot on segment 7. Female emerald cascaders look very similar to the males.
Where Does It Live?
These dragonflies love to live near fast-flowing, rocky streams. They are often seen flying over small rivers and brooks in hilly areas.
Life Cycle and Habits
The young dragonflies, called larvae, are specially made to hold onto rocks in the speedy water. Female dragonflies lay their eggs in these streams, usually during the summer.
After hatching, the larvae might move to bigger streams as they grow. Adult male emerald cascaders are very active. They fly tirelessly back and forth over streams and rarely stop to rest. Sometimes, you can see a male and female flying together above the water. The female will dip her abdomen into the water to lay her eggs.
