A Young Artist's Life

Emilio Aladrén was born in Madrid in 1906. His father was a soldier from Zaragoza, and his mother was from Russia. When he was about 16 years old, in 1922, Emilio started studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. This famous school helped him become the sculptor he was meant to be.

After finishing his studies, Emilio showed his art in many exhibitions and entered different art competitions. He even won a third-place medal in a big national art competition in 1934. He became very successful during a time when Francisco Franco was the leader of Spain. During this period, Emilio created many bronze statues, especially busts (sculptures of a person's head and shoulders) of important government officials.

Emilio Aladrén is also known for his friendship with the famous Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. They were friends between 1925 and 1927. When their friendship ended, it made Lorca feel very sad. This sadness was so strong that it inspired him to travel to New York City for a change of scenery. His time there led him to write one of his most famous collections of poems, called Poet in New York.
