Emiliyan Stanev (whose real name was Nikola Stoyanov Stanev) was a famous Bulgarian writer from the 20th century. He was born on February 28, 1907, and passed away on March 15, 1979. Stanev is well-known for his stories about animals and nature, as well as his historical novels. Many of his books are still loved by readers today, especially children and teenagers.

Early Life and Nature's Influence

Emiliyan Stanev was born in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, in 1907. He spent his childhood in Tarnovo and a town called Elena. From a young age, his father often took him on hunting trips outdoors. These adventures deeply influenced Stanev, and he later wrote many stories that beautifully describe nature and animals.

After finishing high school in 1928, Stanev moved to Sofia. There, he studied painting for a while. Later, he also studied at the Free University of Political and Economic Sciences, which is now known as the University of National and World Economy. He worked as an office worker for the city of Sofia for many years. He even became the director of a hunting reserve in a village called Bukovets in 1945.

A Writer's Journey

Emiliyan Stanev started publishing his first stories in 1931. He wrote for many different magazines and newspapers, showing his talent for storytelling. He even led the fiction section of the Literary Front newspaper.

Stanev wrote many kinds of stories:

  • Tales about animals and their lives.
  • Stories about people and their place in the world.
  • Historical novels that brought the past to life.

His first book was a collection of short stories called Tempting Glitters, published in 1938.

Connecting with Nature

In 1940, Stanev released another book called Alone. This book began a series of works where he explored the special connection between man and nature. He continued this theme in books like Wolfish Nights (1943), Workdays and Holidays (1945), Wild Bird (1946), and In a Silent Night (1948).

One of his most famous works, The Peach Thief, came out in 1948. This story was so popular that it was even made into a movie in 1964.

Emiliyan Stanev also wrote many wonderful books specifically for children and teenagers. These stories often featured animals and exciting adventures. Some of his popular books for young readers include:

After 1950, Emiliyan Stanev spent 14 years working on a big novel called Ivan Kondarev. This book described important events from the September Uprising of 1923 in Bulgaria.

His later works often explored deeper philosophical ideas and showed his amazing knowledge of Bulgarian history. Some of these historical novels include:
