Emma Gwynedd Mary Chambers (born March 11, 1964 – died February 21, 2018) was an English actress. She was known for her funny roles on TV, in movies, and on stage. Emma became famous for playing Alice Tinker in the popular BBC comedy show The Vicar of Dibley. She also played Honey Thacker in the movie Notting Hill (1999).

Emma Chambers' Early Life

Emma Chambers was born in Doncaster, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on March 11, 1964. Her father was a doctor, and her mother was Noelle. She had two siblings, Sarah and Simon, who later started a modeling agency. Emma went to St. Mary's School and then St Swithun's School. She studied acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in the 1980s.

Starting Her Acting Career

Emma Chambers began acting on stage in the late 1980s. She joined a theatre group in Scarborough called the Stephen Joseph Theatre. One of her first big roles was playing Geain in a play called Henceforward... in 1987. She acted alongside famous actors like Ian McKellen. Emma later played this role again in London's famous West End.

In 1989, Emma was nominated for an award for her work in a BBC Radio 4 show. That same year, she played Lucy Baines in another play called Invisible Friends. She continued this role when the play moved to the Royal National Theatre in 1991. Critics praised her acting as a teenager who uses an imaginary friend to escape her difficult home life.

In 1991, Emma also performed in William Shakespeare's play As You Like It in Sheffield. She returned to the Royal National Theatre in 1993 for another play.

Famous Roles on TV and in Movies

Emma Chambers took on smaller TV roles before getting her big break. In 1994, she played Charity Pecksniff in a TV show based on the Charles Dickens novel Martin Chuzzlewit.

From 1994 to 2007, Emma played the much-loved character Alice Tinker in the BBC comedy The Vicar of Dibley. Alice was a sweet, often confused, church verger. Emma appeared in all 20 episodes and four special shows for Comic Relief. In 1998, she won a British Comedy Award for Best Actress for her role as Alice.

Emma also lent her voice to animated TV shows. She was the voice of "Belle Stickleback" in Pond Life (1996 and 2000). She also played Helen Yardley in the TV series How Do You Want Me? (1998).

In 1999, Emma starred in the popular movie Notting Hill. She played Honey Thacker, the younger sister of the main character played by Hugh Grant.

She also appeared in a TV drama called Take a Girl Like You (2000). Emma provided voices for other animated projects, including The Wind in the Willows (1995) and the CBeebies series Little Robots (2003).

In 2002, Emma toured with a play called Benefactors.

Personal Life and Passing

Emma Chambers was married to fellow actor Ian M Dunn. Before she got married, she lived with Ian McKellen, who she saw as a father figure. Emma had allergies to animals and also asthma.

Emma Chambers passed away on February 21, 2018, at the age of 53. She died from a heart attack.

After her passing, BBC One showed an episode of The Vicar of Dibley in her memory. On what would have been her 54th birthday, the Gold TV channel also had a special The Vicar of Dibley day to remember her.

In December 2020, during special 'lockdown' episodes of The Vicar of Dibley, Emma's character Alice was written out of the show. It was explained that Alice had passed away from cancer. The final lockdown episode ended with a special message. It said, "In loving memory of Liz, John, Emma and Roger," remembering Emma and three other actors from the show who had also passed away.
