Emma Clayton is a British writer who creates exciting dystopian thrillers for young people. Her most famous books are The Roar and The Whisper. The Roar was nominated for the Carnegie Medal in 2009. It also won the Yorkshire Coast Book Award. Plus, it was chosen for the USBBY 2010 Outstanding International Books Honor List. It was also on the 2010 Texas Lone Star Reading List.
About Emma Clayton
Emma Clayton moved around a lot as a child. This was because her dad was in the Royal Air Force. She was seven years old when he passed away.
When she was a teenager, she learned to be a field archaeologist. This means she helped dig up old things from the ground. For a short time, she also worked as an illustrator, drawing pictures for different projects. In her mid-twenties, she went back to school. She studied film and how to write screenplays.
Emma wrote her first novel when she was 26. This was after her daughter was born. She then wrote The Roar a few years later. She was studying Visual Communications at the time.
Her Books
Emma Clayton's first book for middle schoolers was The Roar. Chicken House published it in the United Kingdom in July 2008. It came out in the United States in April 2009.
In February 2012, Chicken House released the sequel, The Whisper. This book also came out in both the UK and the US. Both The Roar and The Whisper tell the story of twins, Mika and Ellie. They were separated but use a special government plan to find each other. They live on a planet surrounded by a wall, where many lies are told.
