Emma of Blois (born around 950, died December 27, 1003) was an important woman in medieval France. She became the Duchess of Aquitaine when she married William IV, Duke of Aquitaine. Later, she took charge of Aquitaine as a regent for her son, William V, Duke of Aquitaine. This means she ruled the land for him from 996 until 1004, because he was too young or unable to rule himself.

Early Life and Marriage
Emma of Blois was born around the year 950. Her father was Theobald I, Count of Blois, a powerful noble. Her mother was Luitgarde of Vermandois.
Becoming Duchess of Aquitaine
In 968, Emma married William IV, Duke of Aquitaine. This marriage made her the Duchess of Aquitaine. Aquitaine was a large and important region in what is now France.
William IV's Retirement
William IV, Emma's husband, was known for his love of hunting. Around the year 990, he decided to leave his duties as duke. He chose to retire to a monastery, which is a place where monks live and dedicate their lives to religion.
Emma's Rule as Regent
When her husband retired, Emma stepped up to lead Aquitaine. She became the regent for her son, William V. A regent is someone who rules a country when the rightful ruler is too young or unable to govern.
Founding Monasteries
