History of Emmanuel College

How the School Started

St. Paul's College first opened its doors in 1965. It was started by an American group called the Marianists. The Archbishop of Melbourne, Daniel Mannix, asked them to create a Catholic high school just for boys.

The school's first colours were red, white, and blue. Its motto was Ecce Mater Tua, which is Latin for "Behold Thy Mother". In 2008, the school opened a second campus in Point Cook. This new campus was named Notre Dame.

Building the Campuses

St. Paul's Campus

In the early 1960s, local church leaders bought a large piece of land in Altona North. Parents of the first students helped build and landscape the school. The main building, called the "Jubilee Building", was finished in 1969.

Other buildings were added later:

  • The Chaminade Library opened in 1971.
  • The Art/Craft/Science Lab and senior classrooms (the "Winters Building") were ready in 1979.
  • An administration area and a gym were completed in 1982.

The Jubilee Building was updated in 1998. In 2004, with government help, the library was made bigger. Two new computer labs were also built. These were finished in 2005. More new buildings were added between 2009 and 2010. These included an expanded Technology Building and a new canteen and gym. A new language center, the McMahon Language Centre, was also built.

Notre Dame Campus

Building work for the Notre Dame Campus in Point Cook began in mid-2007. The campus officially opened in 2008. At first, only Year 7 students attended. More buildings were added as more year levels joined the school. The first group of Year 12 students graduated from Notre Dame in 2013.

Becoming Emmanuel College

In 2006, plans began to change St. Paul's College into Emmanuel College. By 2008, the change was complete. The school became Emmanuel College and welcomed both boys and girls. It also got a new emblem and a new motto: Life To The Full. This motto comes from the Bible, where it says: "I have come that they may have life and have it to the full" (John 10:10).

School Leaders

Christopher Stock was the principal of the St. Paul's campus from 1997. When Emmanuel College was formed in 2008, he became the principal for both campuses. He led the college for 26 years, stepping down in 2022.

Since 2023, Dr. Janine Biggin has been the principal. She is known for her dedication to Catholic education.

House System

Emmanuel College has a house system with five different houses:

  • McCoy (Navy)
  • Cassidy (Red)
  • McCluskey (Gold)
  • Winters (Green)
  • Chaminade (Sky blue)

These houses are named after important people. Most are named after the Marianists who helped start the school. Father John Cassidy, from St. Mary's Parish, also helped establish the college. Chaminade House is named after William Chaminade. He was the person who founded the Marianist order.

Both the St. Paul's and Notre Dame campuses have homerooms. Each homeroom has about 25 to 30 students, from Year 7 to Year 12.
