Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Emmy Worringer (born in 1878, died in 1961) was a talented German artist. She helped start an important art group called the Gereonsklub in Cologne, Germany. This group was active just before World War I and brought together many new and exciting artists.

Emmy's Early Art Journey

Emmy Worringer loved art from a young age. She studied art in Dachau, a place known for its art community. She also attended the Academy in Munich, another big city for artists. While studying, she met other future artists. These included Olga Oppenheimer, who became an expressionist painter and later Emmy's sister-in-law. She also studied with Adolf Hölzl, a modernist painter.

Starting the Gereonsklub

After her studies, Emmy Worringer shared an art studio in Cologne with Olga Oppenheimer. In 1911, they teamed up with another artist, Franz M. Jansen. Together, they founded the Gereonsklub. This was a special group for artists who wanted to try new things. It was called an "avant-garde" group, meaning they were ahead of their time.

What the Gereonsklub Did

Emmy Worringer and her brother, Wilhelm Worringer, who was an art historian, worked hard for the Gereonsklub. They planned interesting lectures and organized art shows. These shows featured very important artists of the time. Some famous names included Franz Marc, Paul Klee, August Macke, and Robert Delaunay. The Gereonsklub even hosted one of the first exhibitions for a famous group called the Blue Rider. The Gereonsklub was active for a short time, from 1911 until 1913, but it made a big impact on the art world.
