The South Green Fire Station is a cool old building in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. It's also called the Engine Company 1 Fire Station. This amazing building was built in 1927. It shows off beautiful styles like Classical and Collegiate Gothic architecture. A famous local company designed it. The fire station and another building behind it (used for fixing fire trucks) were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Today, this station is home to Engine Company 1 and Ladder Company 6 of the Hartford Fire Department.
About the Fire Station
The South Green Fire Station is in downtown Hartford. You can find it on the west side of Main Street. It sits between Charter Oak Avenue and Park Streets.
Building Features
This fire station is a two-story building. It is made of brick with special limestone decorations. The front of the building has three main sections. The two sections on the right are for fire trucks. The section on the left is for people to enter.
The openings for the fire trucks are shaped like pointed arches. They have limestone trim with cool carvings of firefighting tools. Above these openings, there are three windows. Each window has a stone panel with a diamond shape in the middle. The left section has a special window that sticks out, called an oriel window.
A Bit of History
This station was the second home for Engine Company 1. This fire company started in 1864. That's when Hartford created its first team of paid firefighters. The first fire station was also on this spot. But it was replaced to make room for bigger, motorized fire trucks.
The Maintenance Building
Behind the main fire station, there is another brick building. It has simple Classical Revival features. This building was constructed in 1920. It was originally used to fix and maintain fire engines. Now, it holds offices for different businesses.
