Enno's Life and Adventures
Enno I wasn't very keen on becoming count after his father. So, his mother, Theda, continued to rule East Frisia.
A Special Journey
Enno decided to go on a long journey, called a pilgrimage. He traveled all the way to the Holy Land, a very important religious place. In Jerusalem, he received a special honor. He was named a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. This was a big deal for knights back then.
A Family Mix-Up
While Enno was away, something interesting happened back home. His sister, Almut, fell in love with a nobleman named Engelmann von Horstell. He was the drost (a local official) of Friedeburg Castle. Almut and Engelmann wanted to get married. However, Almut's mother, Theda, did not approve of their marriage.
Despite her mother's wishes, Almut moved to Friedeburg Castle with Engelmann. She also took some valuable family jewels with her.
A Tragic Accident
When Enno returned to East Frisia, he heard what happened. He thought his sister had been kidnapped! Enno quickly went after the drost to his castle. It was winter, and the moat (a ditch filled with water around the castle) was frozen. Enno believed he could walk across the ice.
Sadly, Enno was wearing heavy armor. The ice was not strong enough to hold him. He fell through the ice and drowned.
Remembering Enno
Enno I was only 30 years old when he died. To honor him, his mother Theda had a special memorial shield made. This shield can still be seen today. It is displayed in the Great Church in Emden, which is now the Johannes-a-Lasco Library. The shield is near the crypt where the Lords of East Frisia are buried.
