Enoch is a small, unincorporated community located in Upshur County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own official city government.

History of Enoch

Enoch was started by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first settlers from this church arrived in the area in 1906.

Early Days and Growth

In 1908, a Sunday School was set up in Enoch. Just two years later, in 1910, a special building was built for the Sunday School. In 1911, the Enoch Branch of the church was officially organized by Samuel O. Bennion. By 1930, Enoch was one of only eight communities in all of Texas where the church owned its own chapel.

By the mid-1930s, Enoch had grown a bit. It had one church and two stores. About 250 people lived there in 1938. Dairy farming was the most important way people made a living in the community.

Changes Over Time

In 1951, the school in Enoch was combined with the Gilmer Independent School District. This meant students from Enoch would go to school in Gilmer. By the mid-1960s, the number of residents in Enoch had gone down to about 125 people.

By the 1990s, there were no longer any active public places or organizations in Enoch. In the year 2000, only 25 people lived in the community.

Church Organization in Enoch

The local church groups in Enoch also saw some changes over the years. In October 1953, when the Dallas Stake was formed, the Enoch Branch became part of it. A "stake" is a larger group of church congregations.

In 1958, the Enoch area was moved to the Shreveport Louisiana Stake. The Enoch branch and another group called the Kelsey Ward joined with the Gilmer branch. Together, they formed a new group called the Kelsey-Gilmer Ward. As of 1997, Enoch was part of the Gilmer 2nd Ward, which was one of three wards in Gilmer.
