Early Life
Enoch Adejare Adeboye was born on March 2, 1942. His birthplace was Ifewara, a town near Ife in what was then British Nigeria. He grew up in a very modest family. He often shares that he didn't own his first pair of shoes until he was 18 years old.
Education and Learning
Enoch Adejare Adeboye began his schooling in 1956 at Ilesha Grammar School. He then went to the University of Nigeria in Nsukka. Due to the Nigerian Civil War, he finished his first degree at the University of Ife. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1967.
Later, in 1969, he received a Master's degree in Hydrodynamics from the University of Lagos. He continued his studies and earned a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 1975, also from the University of Lagos.
His Ministry Work
Adejare Adeboye joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1973. He started as an interpreter, helping people understand messages. In 1975, he was ordained as a pastor by Pa. Josiah Akindayomi.
He became the General Overseer of the church in 1981. For three years, he balanced this role with his university job. Eventually, he decided to leave his university position to focus on preaching full-time. In 2017, he announced he was stepping down as General Overseer, but he still holds the role.
The church was not widely known before Adeboye became its leader. As of March 2017, it had branches in about 198 countries. There were more than 14 million members in Nigeria alone. Adeboye's goal is to have a church within a five-minute walk in developing cities. In developed cities, he aims for a church within a five-minute drive.
He is known for preaching the "prosperity gospel." This idea suggests that God can bless people in their lives now, not just in the future. He believes that God can do good things for people in the present.
In 2022, he celebrated his 80th birthday. His foundation has also helped hospitals. For example, it donated eight dialysis machines to Wuse District Hospital. They also provided a water purification system and an electrical generator.
University Support
Adeboye has given money to support four Nigerian universities. These include Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Nigeria. This support helps students and research at these schools.
