The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is a very large Christian church that started in Lagos, Nigeria. It is known for its lively worship style, called Pentecostal.
Since 1981, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has been the main leader, called the General Overseer. In 2022, about 50,000 people attended the main church in Lagos each week.

How the RCCG Started
The RCCG was founded in 1952 by Reverend Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi. He had been involved in other churches before starting the RCCG.
Reverend Akindayomi chose Enoch Adejare Adeboye to be the next General Overseer. Pastor Adeboye was a mathematics teacher at the University of Lagos. He joined the church in 1973.
At first, Pastor Adeboye helped by translating Reverend Akindayomi's sermons. He translated them from the Yoruba language to English. He became a pastor in the church in 1975.
Growth and Development
In 1981, Pastor Enoch Adeboye officially became the General Overseer of the church. The church began to grow even more.
- In 1983, the church bought land for a special place called the Redemption Camp in Mowe.
- In 1988, a group for students called the "Redeemed Christian Fellowship" (RCF) was created. This group helps young people in colleges and universities.
- In 1990, the Redeemed Christian Church of God Bible School was started. This school helps train new pastors and church workers.
- Also in 1990, a group called Christ the Redeemer's Friends Universal (CRFU) was formed. This group helps gather money and support for the church's projects.
- In 2005, Redeemer's University was opened. This is a university run by the church.
RCCG Around the World
The RCCG has grown into one of the biggest Christian groups from Africa. It is working to become a global faith. Church leaders hope that one day, at least one person in every family around the world will be a member of the RCCG.
By 2008, the church had 14,000 churches and five million members in Nigeria. It also had churches in 80 other countries.
The church is organized into different areas around the world. In Nigeria, there are 25 main regions. The church also holds special events. These include the Holy Ghost Service, which happens every month in Nigeria. There are also big yearly events like the Holy Ghost Convention in August and the Holy Ghost Congress in December.
What the RCCG Believes
The RCCG believes in the Bible and the Holy Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). They believe that the Devil exists.
They also believe that God made humans in His own image. Important beliefs include:
- Asking for forgiveness for sins.
- Being made clean from sins by God's kindness.
- Being made holy.
- Getting baptized in water.
- Receiving the Holy Spirit.
- Making things right if you have done something wrong.
- That God can heal people without medicine through prayer and His help.
