Enos Luther Brookes (1891–1944) was an important person who worked as a scientist, a teacher, and a leader for civil rights in the United States. He was born in Jamaica, which was a British colony at the time.

Early Life and Learning

Enos Luther Brookes was born in Jamaica. His father, James M. Brookes, was a school teacher. His mother was Martha Brookes. In 1914, when he was 23 years old, he moved to the United States.

He went to Tuskegee Institute to start his college education. Later, he earned his first degree from Lincoln University in 1923. He was the best student in his graduating class, which is called being the valedictorian. He then continued his studies at Columbia University. In 1928, he earned his master's degree in chemistry there.

Working as a Professor

After finishing his studies, Brookes became a teacher at several universities. He taught at Columbia University and at Clark University. At Clark University, he became the head of the Science Department. This meant he was in charge of all the science classes and teachers.

He also taught at Alabama State University and Florida A & M. Enos Brookes helped start a science club called the Alpha Delta Alpha Scientific Society at Clark University. He even helped write a special study plan for science classes. His work is recognized on a mural at North Carolina A & T, which honors Black scientists.

Working for Civil Rights

Enos Brookes was a strong supporter of civil rights. He became the president of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP. The NAACP is a very important organization that works to ensure equal rights for all people.

He often spoke at NAACP meetings to share his ideas and encourage others. He also helped solve problems within the NAACP itself. Brookes was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, which is a brotherhood focused on leadership and service. He even started a new chapter of this fraternity at Clark University. He also served on the board of directors for the Atlanta Tuberculosis Association, helping with public health.

His Family Life

In 1928, Enos Brookes married Stella Lucille Brewer. She was a professor who taught English. Enos Luther Brookes passed away in 1944 from a heart attack.
