Enric Serra i Auqué (born January 7, 1858, in Barcelona, Spain – died February 16, 1918, in Rome, Italy) was a talented Catalan painter. He was famous for his beautiful landscape paintings, which followed the Neoclassical style. This style often looked back to the art of ancient Greece and Rome.

His Life as an Artist

Enric Serra i Auqué studied art at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona until 1874. His teachers included Domènec Talarn [es] and Ramon Martí Alsina.

Like many artists of his time, Enric decided to continue his studies in Rome, Italy. He received financial help from the Masriera brothers, Josep and Francesc, and also from Joaquim de Càrcer i d'Amat [ca], who was the Marquès of Castellbell.

Enric arrived in Rome just in time to learn from Marià Fortuny, a very famous painter. He also became a member of the Accademia Chigi, an important art academy.

After finishing his studies in 1878, Enric decided to stay in Rome. Many of the paintings he created there showed beautiful lakes. He was also inspired by the works of another artist named Ramón Tusquets.

As Enric became more well-known, his art studio became a popular place. Many young painters would visit him there. For fun, he collected old furniture and antiques. He often used these items as backgrounds in his paintings.

Enric regularly sent his artworks back to Barcelona. They were shown at the Sala Parés, a famous art gallery. In 1895, he moved to Paris, France. That same year, he won a third-class medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Spain.

Later, Pope Leo XIII asked Enric to create a special mosaic. This mosaic showed the Virgin and Child and was made for the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll in Spain.

You can see Enric Serra i Auqué's paintings today. Some are at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. Others are at the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer in Vilanova i la Geltrú.
