Enrique de la Mata (born September 20, 1933 – died September 6, 1987) was an important Spanish politician, lawyer, and government minister. He also led the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from 1981 to 1987. This organization helps people all over the world.

Helping Spain Become a Democracy

After a long period of strict rule in Spain under General Franco, things began to change in 1975 when Franco died. Spain started its journey to become a democracy, where people could vote for their leaders. This time was called the Spanish transition to democracy.

Enrique de la Mata played a key part in this change. From 1976 to 1977, he was the Minister for Trade Union Relations. In this job, he helped bring back trade unions to Spain. Trade unions are groups that work to protect the rights and interests of workers. Allowing them to operate freely was a big step towards a more democratic Spain.

His Role in Politics

Later, Enrique de la Mata joined a political party called the Union of the Democratic Centre. He was chosen by the people to represent the Teruel region in the Spanish Parliament in 1979. The Parliament is where laws are made for the country. He served there for a few years, helping to shape Spain's new democratic future.

Leading the Red Cross

One of Enrique de la Mata's most important roles was leading the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. He was their President from 1981 until he passed away in 1987.

What is the Red Cross?

The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are a huge worldwide network. They provide help and support to people in need, especially during emergencies, disasters, or conflicts. They offer medical aid, shelter, food, and comfort to those who are suffering. As President, Enrique de la Mata helped guide this vital humanitarian work around the globe.
