Envigado was founded in 1775. It officially became a municipality in 1814. The main founders were José Antonio Isaza y Atuesta, Lucas de Ochoa y Tirado, and Vicente Restrepo.

Some people believe the name "Envigado" comes from the large trees that used to grow there. These trees were used to make vigas, which are wooden beams for building houses.

Spanish explorers first arrived in the Aburrá Valley in 1541. They left after a month to look for gold. But they came back about 90 years later, in the early 1600s, and stayed.

For about 150 years, wealthy Spanish families lived in the countryside of Envigado. They had big homes and produced food for the Antioquia region.

The city part of Envigado started to grow after 1775. This happened when the Santa Gertrudis Parish was created. This area is now known as "El Parque de Envigado," the city center.

On July 10, 2016, Envigado joined the Metropolitan Area. This group includes nine other nearby municipalities. These are Caldas, La Estrella, Sabaneta, Itagüí, Medellín, Bello, Copacabana, Girardota, and Barbosa.
