Who Are the Epimeliads?
Epimeliads are a type of dryad nymph. Dryads are spirits connected to trees. The Epimeliads have a special job. They protect certain parts of nature.
What Do They Protect?
Epimeliads are known as protectors of apple trees. But the ancient Greek word for "apple" (μηλον) also meant "sheep". This means Epimeliads could also be seen as protectors of sheep and goats. So, they look after both fruit trees and farm animals!
Their Special Look
These nymphs have very unique hair. It is white, just like the delicate blossoms of an apple tree. Their hair also looks like soft, undyed wool from a sheep. This matches their connection to both apples and sheep.
Other Names and Powers
Epimeliads are sometimes called Maliades or Meliades (Μηλιαδες). These names also mean "of sheep" or "of apples." Like other dryads, Epimeliads have a cool power. They can change their shape! They can shift from being a tree into a human form.
They also had another important role. They were known as guards of a very special tree. This tree held the famous Golden Fleece. The Golden Fleece was a magical golden sheepskin from a myth.
