Golden Fleece facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Golden Fleece is a magical fleece (which is like a sheep's coat) made of pure gold. It comes from a special ram (a male sheep) that had golden wool and could fly!

This amazing object is famous from the ancient Greek story of Jason and his brave crew, the Argonauts. They went on a very dangerous journey to find the fleece. King Pelias ordered Jason to get the fleece so Jason could become the rightful king of Iolcus, a city in Thessaly, Greece.

The story of the Golden Fleece is very old. People were telling it even in the time of Homer, a famous Greek poet who lived around the 8th century BC. There are many different versions of this exciting tale.

What Was the Golden Ram?

In some versions of the story, the special golden ram was said to be the child of the sea god Poseidon and a goddess named Themisto. Sometimes, other goddesses like Nephele or Theophane are mentioned as its mother. This shows how different storytellers added their own ideas to the myth over time.

The Quest for the Golden Fleece

Jason's journey to find the Golden Fleece was full of challenges. He gathered a team of heroes called the Argonauts, and they sailed on a ship named the Argo. Their quest took them to a faraway land called Colchis. The fleece was guarded there by a fierce dragon that never slept. Jason had to face many dangers and use his courage and cleverness to succeed.

Ancient Stories of the Fleece

One of the most famous ancient books about the Golden Fleece is called Argonautica. It was written by a poet named Apollonius of Rhodes around 250 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. He used older stories that are now lost. Another writer, Valerius Flaccus, also wrote a version of the Argonautica in Latin much later, during the time of the Roman emperor Vespasian. These ancient writings helped keep the story alive for thousands of years.

The Golden Fleece in Movies

The exciting story of Jason, the Argonauts, and the Golden Fleece has also been made into movies! Two well-known films are Hercules from 1958, starring Steve Reeves, and Jason and the Argonauts from 1963, starring Todd Armstrong. These movies helped introduce the ancient myth to new generations.
