Thessaly facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thessaly is a region in the middle of Greece. It's a very old area that has been important throughout history. Today, it's one of Greece's 13 main regions.

Long ago, Thessaly was sometimes called Aeolia. You can even find it mentioned in ancient stories like Homer's Odyssey. For about 450 years, Thessaly was part of the Ottoman Empire. But in 1881, it became part of modern Greece. Since 1987, it has been an official region of the country.

Thessaly is divided into five smaller areas called regional units, and it has 25 municipalities (which are like local towns or districts). The main city and capital of Thessaly is Larissa.
