Episynlestes is a group of large, beautiful damselflies. These insects are known for their dull bronze-black bodies, light markings, and a special white tip on their tails! You can often spot them resting with their wings spread wide open.
These damselflies are found only in north-eastern Australia. They love to live near streams, which are their natural homes. When we say they are endemic to Australia, it means they are found nowhere else in the world!
Different Kinds of Episynlestes
The Episynlestes group includes a few different kinds of damselflies. Each one has its own unique name:
- Episynlestes albicauda: This one is also called the southern whitetip. It was first described in 1913.
- Episynlestes cristatus: This damselfly is known as the tropical whitetip. Scientists officially named it in 1977.
- Episynlestes intermedius: You might hear this one called the intermediate whitetip. It was identified in 1985.
