Erich Tschermak, Edler von Seysenegg (born November 15, 1871 – died October 11, 1962) was an Austrian agronomist. An agronomist is a scientist who studies how to grow crops better. Erich Tschermak created new types of crops that could fight off diseases. These included special kinds of wheat-rye and oat hybrids. A hybrid is a mix of two different plants or animals.

He was the son of Gustav Tschermak von Seysenegg, who studied minerals. His mother's father, Eduard Fenzl, was a botanist. A botanist studies plants. Eduard Fenzl even taught Gregor Mendel about plants when Mendel was a student in Vienna. Gregor Mendel is famous for his work on genetics, which is the study of how traits are passed down from parents to children.

Early Life and Education

Erich Tschermak was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1871. He grew up in a family of scientists. His father was a well-known expert in minerals. His grandfather was a plant scientist who taught one of the most important figures in biology, Gregor Mendel.

Erich Tschermak studied hard and earned his doctorate degree in 1896. He got this degree from the University of Halle in Germany.

Discoveries in Genetics

In 1901, Tschermak started teaching at the University of Agricultural Sciences Vienna. Five years later, in 1906, he became a professor there.

Erich von Tschermak is famous for something very important in science. He was one of four scientists who, at the same time but working separately, rediscovered the important work of Gregor Mendel. Mendel's work from many years before explained how traits are passed down through generations. This is the basis of modern genetics.

Tschermak published his findings in June 1900. His brother, Armin von Tschermak-Seysenegg, also influenced his work in genetics.

Awards and Honors

Erich Tschermak received many awards for his important scientific work. These honors showed how much his discoveries helped the world of agriculture and genetics.

  • He became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture in 1912.
  • The University of Vienna gave him an honorary doctorate degree in 1950. This is a special degree given to people who have achieved great things.
  • He also became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Physiography in 1951.
  • The City of Vienna honored him with its Ring of Honour in 1951.
  • He received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. This is a high award for people who have made big contributions to science and art in Austria.
