Erik Adrian Hooks (born in 1967) is an American public safety leader. He currently serves as the Deputy Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Before this, he was the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety from 2017 to 2021.
Erik Hooks' Early Life and Career
Erik Hooks grew up in Spring Lake, North Carolina. He went to North Carolina State University. There, he earned two degrees: one in political science and government, and another in liberal arts.
Hooks began his career in public safety in 1989. He joined the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. For ten years, he worked as a special agent. This means he was like an investigator for the department. Later, he became an assistant special agent. He also served as an assistant director.
In January 2017, Governor Roy Cooper chose Hooks for a big job. He became the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. In this role, he helped keep the state safe. He worked there until he retired in July 2021.
Joining the FEMA Team
On July 27, 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Erik Hooks for a new role. He was chosen to be the Deputy Administrator of FEMA. FEMA stands for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It's a government group that helps people during disasters like hurricanes or floods.
To get the job, Hooks had to be approved by the U.S. Senate. The Senate's Homeland Security Committee held a meeting about his nomination. This happened on November 18, 2021. On December 1, 2021, the committee agreed that he was a good choice. They sent his nomination to the full Senate.
Finally, on December 7, 2021, the entire Senate approved him. They voted by voice, which means they said "yes" out loud. Erik Hooks officially started his new job as Deputy Administrator of FEMA on December 13, 2021.
