Erik Nevland (born 10 November 1977) is a former Norwegian footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was a goal scorer. Erik played for teams in Norway, England, Sweden, and the Netherlands. He also played eight times for the Norway national football team. After he stopped playing, Erik worked as a car salesman. Today, he is the sporting director for Viking, a football club in Norway.
Erik's Club Career
Erik Nevland was born in Stavanger, Norway. He started his football journey at Viking. When he was 19, he moved to Manchester United in England. This happened after he scored many goals during a trial with the team.
His only goal for Manchester United's main team was in a League Cup game in October 1998. He also played one league game for them. Erik went on loan back to Viking and also to IFK Göteborg in Sweden.
In January 2000, Erik returned to Viking permanently. He helped them win the Norwegian Cup in 2001. He also scored two important goals when Viking famously beat Chelsea in the UEFA Cup in 2002.
In November 2004, Erik moved to Groningen in the Netherlands. He quickly became a fan favorite there. In his first half-season, he scored 16 goals in 20 games! He even scored the very first goal in Groningen's new Euroborg stadium. In 2007, fans in Groningen voted him 'Groninger of the Year'.
On 28 January 2008, Erik joined Premier League team Fulham in England. He played over 50 league games for Fulham. Even though his manager wanted him to stay, Erik decided to return to Viking in June 2010. He was made the captain of the team.
Playing for Norway
Erik Nevland played eight times for the Norway national football team. His first game for the national team was in 2001.
He also played 22 games for Norway's Under-21 team and scored one goal. He was part of the team that finished third in the 1998 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
What Erik Does Now
On 5 August 2021, Erik Nevland became the sporting director for Viking. This means he helps manage the club's football operations.
