In November 2004, Erik moved to Groningen in the Netherlands. He quickly became a fan favorite there. In his first half-season, he scored 16 goals in 20 games! He even scored the very first goal in Groningen's new Euroborg stadium. In 2007, fans in Groningen voted him 'Groninger of the Year'.

On 28 January 2008, Erik joined Premier League team Fulham in England. He played over 50 league games for Fulham. Even though his manager wanted him to stay, Erik decided to return to Viking in June 2010. He was made the captain of the team.
