About Erika Kokay

Early Life and Work

Erika Kokay was born to Lojos Ferenz Kokay and Maria do Perpétuo Socorro Jucá. Before she became a politician, she worked as a banker. This means she worked in a bank, helping people with their money.

Since 1992, Kokay has also been a syndicalist. This means she works with trade unions. Trade unions are groups that protect the rights of workers. She is a member and a past president of a large trade union called Central Única dos Trabalhadores.

Her Work in Politics

Erika Kokay has been involved in many important political decisions in Brazil. She often votes on laws that affect many people.

Important Votes

Kokay voted against removing former President Dilma Rousseff from office. This process is called impeachment. She also voted against a new law in 2017 that changed rules for workers in Brazil. This law was called the Brazilian labor reform. Later, she voted to support an investigation into the next president, Michel Temer. This investigation was about possible corruption.

Supporting Human Rights

Kokay strongly opposes a bill called the "nonpartisan school bill." She believes this bill would limit free speech in schools. She thinks it could make students feel like "enemies of the nation."

She supported the National Truth Commission. This group looked into crimes that happened during Brazil's military rule. This period was from 1946 to 1988. Kokay also supports equal rights for all people, including those in the LGBT community. This was a main topic in her campaign when she ran for re-election in 2018.
