Ermengol X: Count of Urgell
Ermengol X was the son of Álvaro of Urgell and his second wife, Cecilia. His mother was the daughter of Roger-Bernard II of Foix. When his father died, Ermengol became the Count of Urgell. This was a big responsibility for a young person.
Early Life and Challenges
Because Ermengol was so young, he needed someone to guide him. Roger-Bernard III of Foix helped him rule at first. However, some of his father's relatives did not agree with Ermengol becoming count. These relatives were from the Montcada family. They caused problems for Ermengol's rule.
In 1276, Ermengol joined a group of leaders who were against King Peter III of Aragon. Over the next two years, he fought to get back his lands. These lands had been taken by his rivals. By 1278, Ermengol met with the king. The king then officially gave him Urgell as his territory. This meant Ermengol was now the rightful ruler.
Working with the Kings
After this, Ermengol became a loyal friend to King Peter III. He traveled with the king to places like Sicily in 1282 and Bordeaux in 1283. When King Peter died in 1295, Ermengol continued to be a close helper and advisor. He worked with Peter's sons, Alfonso III and James II.
Ermengol helped Alfonso III conquer the Kingdom of Majorca in 1287. He was a trusted companion to both kings. His advice was important in many decisions.
His Legacy
Ermengol X died in Camporrells without any children of his own. Before he passed away, he made a plan for his lands. He named Alfonso, the second son of King James II, as his heir. But there was a condition. Alfonso had to marry Ermengol's grandniece, Teresa de Entença. She was Ermengol's legal heir.
With Ermengol's death, his family line, known as the House of Cabrera, came to an end. In his will, Ermengol also left money to start a new building. This building was the Convento de Predicadores de Balaguer. It was a religious center.
