Ermesinde of Carcassonne (born around 975/8 – died March 1, 1058) was a powerful countess. She was the wife of the Count of Barcelona, Girona, and Osona. She also served as a regent for her son, meaning she ruled in his place, from 1018 to 1023.

Ermesinde was the daughter of Roger I, who was the Count of Carcassonne. She married Ramon Borrell, Count of Barcelona, who was the Count of Barcelona.

Ermesinde's Life and Rule

While her husband, Ramon Borrell, was alive, Ermesinde was very active in politics. She led important meetings and even presided over courts. This showed she had a lot of influence.

Ermesinde was very close to the Catholic Church. She supported many church officials, and they, in turn, helped her stay powerful throughout her life. She had different ideas from her son about how to deal with the Muslim rulers to the south. Ermesinde preferred to go to war, partly because many nobles were unhappy with her son's peaceful approach.

When her son died in 1035, Ermesinde once again became a regent. This time, she ruled for her grandson until he was old enough to take control in 1044.

Family and Children

In the year 991, Ermesinde married Ramon Borrell, who was the Count of Barcelona. Together, they had three children:
