Ernest James Hayford was a very important person from the Gold Coast, which is now the country of Ghana. He was born on April 23, 1858. He became both a skilled physician (doctor) and a lawyer. Ernest James Hayford was special because he was the second African person in the Gold Coast to become a fully trained medical doctor. He passed away in London on August 6, 1913.

Early Life and Education
Ernest James Hayford was the oldest son of Reverend Joseph de Graft Hayford. His father was a Methodist minister. His mother's name was Mary Brew. Ernest had two younger brothers, J. E. Casely Hayford and Mark Christian Hayford.
Ernest went to school in several places. He studied in Anomabu and at Cape Coast in the Gold Coast. He also attended the Wesleyan High School in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
First Jobs and Teaching
After his schooling, Ernest started working as an assistant missionary. He also became a head teacher at the Wesleyan Methodist church and school in Elmina. Later, in 1882, he became the headmaster of the Cape Coast Government Boys School.
Becoming a Doctor
Ernest James Hayford was very interested in medicine. From 1882 to 1884, he studied medicine on his own. Then, he moved to London, England, to study medicine properly. He attended St Thomas' Hospital from 1884 to 1888.
After finishing his general medical studies, he decided to specialize. He focused on gynaecology, which is the study of women's health. He trained at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. After all his training, he returned to Cape Coast. There, he opened his own private medical practice.
A Career in Law and Politics
Ernest James Hayford was also very interested in politics and helping his community. He became a key member of the Gold Coast Aborigines' Rights Protection Society. This group worked to protect the rights of the local people.
His interest in politics led him to study law. He first studied law privately. Then, from 1910 to 1913, he attended Lincoln's Inn in London. This is a famous place where people train to become lawyers. In June 1913, he officially became a lawyer, which is called being "Called to the Bar". Sadly, he passed away in London later that same summer.
