Ernest Sachs (born January 25, 1879 – died December 2, 1958) was an important American brain surgeon, also called a neurosurgeon. He is known as one of the Fathers of Neurosurgery, along with Harvey Cushing. This means he helped start and shape the field of brain surgery. He was also a professor at Washington University and led important medical groups.

His Early Life and Learning

Ernest Sachs was born in New York City on January 25, 1879. His father, Julius Sachs, was a teacher. His mother, Rosa Goldman, was the daughter of Marcus Goldman, who founded the famous company Goldman Sachs. Ernest grew up in New York City and started playing the cello when he was six years old.

Ernest Sachs went to Harvard University and finished in 1900. In 1904, he earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. There, he learned from a famous doctor named Professor William Osler. After that, he spent three years training at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also studied in Europe for three more years, learning from top doctors in Vienna, Berlin, and London.

His Career as a Brain Surgeon

Ernest Sachs started working as a neurosurgeon in New York City. In 1911, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri. There, he taught brain surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine. In 1919, he became the first Professor of Neurosurgery in the entire USA. This was a very big deal!

Sachs helped create The Society of Neurological Surgeons, which is a group for brain surgeons. He was a leader in this group for many years, even serving as its president from 1925 to 1927. He also led the American Neurological Association in 1943. These roles show how respected he was in the medical world.

In 1949, Sachs left Washington University. He then became a professor emeritus (a retired professor who still keeps his title) at the Yale School of Medicine.

His Family and Later Years

Ernest Sachs married Mary Parmly Koues in 1913. She was a writer of plays and poems. They had two sons, Ernest Sachs, Jr. and Thomas Dudley Sachs. They also had a daughter who sadly passed away in 1927.

Ernest Sachs died on December 2, 1958, in New Haven, Connecticut.
