Ernestina Lecuona y Casado (born January 16, 1882 – died September 3, 1951) was a talented Cuban musician. She was a skilled pianist, a music teacher, and a composer who wrote many beautiful songs.
Her Life and Music
Ernestina Lecuona y Casado was born in Matanzas, Cuba. She came from a family where music was very important. Her younger brother, Ernesto Lecuona, also became a famous pianist and composer.
Ernestina had other talented family members too. Her grandson, Leo Brouwer, is a well-known classical guitarist. Her nephew, Rafael A. Lecuona, was a gymnast and also involved in politics.
Ernestina studied music at the Centro Asturiano de La Habana. She also learned from a French teacher named Lucía Calderón.
Early Achievements
When Ernestina was just 15 years old, she finished her first musical piece. It was called Habanera Luisa. This song became very popular and was published in Cuba and Spain in 1897.
She even gave early music lessons to her younger brother, Ernesto. This shows how talented she was from a young age.
Travels and Performances
In 1936, Ernestina was invited to New York City by the Pan American Union. There, she performed with the Mexican singer Tito Guizar. She also met another singer, Jessica Dragonette, who started including Ernestina's songs in her own performances.
In 1937, Ernestina started a special orchestra in Cuba. It was made up entirely of women musicians. This orchestra performed for the first time at the Teatro Alkazar. In 1938, they played concerts at the National Theatre.
Ernestina loved to travel and share her music. In 1939, she toured Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. She traveled to South America again between 1940 and 1942. She often toured with her brother, Ernesto. Sometimes, they would play piano together as a duo, performing for four hands. They played at radio stations and famous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in 1948.
Ernestina Lecuona passed away in Havana, Cuba, in 1951. She left behind a wonderful legacy of music and inspiration.
