Ernesto Mejía Sánchez was a famous writer and poet from Nicaragua. He was born in Masaya, Nicaragua, in 1923 and passed away in Mérida, Mexico, in 1985. He studied a lot, even getting a special degree called a doctorate in Madrid, Spain. Later, he taught for many years at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His very first book, published in Mexico in 1946, was a collection of stories called Romances y Corridos Nicaragüenses.
Ernesto Mejía Sánchez had strong opinions about the government. He was not a supporter of the leader at the time, Anastasio Somoza García. Because of his feelings, he wrote a book of political poetry in 1950. This book helped him become a well-known poet. He was also part of a group of important writers called the "Generation of 1940." This group included other famous poets like Carlos Martinez Rivas, Pablo Antonio Cuadra, and Ernesto Cardenal.

A Poet and Expert on Rubén Darío
Besides writing his own poems, Ernesto Mejía Sánchez was also an expert on another very famous Nicaraguan poet, Rubén Darío. He spent time studying Darío's works. In 1983, he helped put together a collection of all of Darío's stories. Then, in 1985, he did the same for Darío's complete poetry.

In 1971, he was given an honorary doctorate degree from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. This is a special award given to people who have achieved great things.
Prestigious Awards
A year later, in 1972, he received the Xavier Villaurrutia Award, which is a very important literary prize. In 1980, he was awarded the Alfonso Reyes International Prize.
Serving His Country
Also in 1980, he became Nicaragua's ambassador (a country's official representative) to Spain. After that, he served as ambassador to Argentina.
