Erudinus facts for kids
Erudinus was an ancient god from Cantabrian mythology. The Cantabrians were a group of people who lived a long time ago in a region of northern Spain called Cantabria. Erudinus was a pagan god, which means he was worshipped by people who believed in many gods, not just one.
The Altar of Erudinus
In 1925, a special stone altar was found on Monte Dobra (Dobra Mountain). This mountain is close to a town called Torrelavega in Cantabria. The altar was discovered by a person named Hermilio Alcalde del Río.
This stone altar has an important message carved into it. Experts believe the message was carved in the year 161 AD. It tells us that a person named Cornelius Vicanus made this altar and dedicated it to the god Erudinus.
Where is the Altar Now?
The original stone altar of Erudinus is now kept safe at the Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria. This museum helps us learn about ancient times in Cantabria.
You can also see a copy of the altar! A replica (a perfect copy) of the altar is placed in a green area in a town called Sierrapando. For many years, from 2001 to 2012, this copy was in a different street in Torrelavega.
