Erzsébet Schaár (born July 29, 1905, in Budafok – died August 29, 1975, in Budapest) was a talented Hungarian sculptor. She was known for her unique and often large-scale artworks.

The Life of Erzsébet Schaár

Erzsébet Schaár began her journey as an artist by studying with Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, a well-known sculptor. Her hard work paid off early in her career. In 1932, she received the Young Artist Award for the Szinyei Prize. This was a great start to her artistic life.

Early Career and Marriage

In 1932, Erzsébet Schaár held her very first solo art show in Budapest. This was an important step for her. A few years later, in 1935, she married another sculptor named Tibor Vilt. They shared a love for art and creating.

Her Unique Sculptures

In the 1940s, Erzsébet Schaár started making small wooden carvings. These pieces were sometimes compared to the works of artist Giacometti. At the same time, she also created many sculptures of people lying down.

Erzsébet Schaár often used parts of buildings in her art. Later, she began working with a light material called styrene. This material was easy to cut and shape. She used it to create amazing life-sized spaces and figures.

Exhibitions and Legacy

Erzsébet Schaár's art became well-known. In 1970, she had a big show called a "retrospective exhibition" at the Műcsarnok in Hungary. This kind of show looks back at an artist's entire career. Two years later, her art was shown in other countries like Antwerp and Geneva.

Even after her death, her work continued to be celebrated. In 1977, the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Düsseldorf, Germany, also held a retrospective exhibition of her sculptures.

Today, you can find many of her public statues in different cities. These include Budapest, Kecskemét, Miskolc, Pécs, and Tihany. A large part of her artwork is kept safe at the St. Stephen's King Museum in Székesfehérvár.
