The Escoe Building was a very important building in Muskogee, Oklahoma. It was also sometimes called the Simmons Building. This historic two-story brick building stood at 228-230 North Second Street. It was built in 1908 and was a special place for the African-American community in Muskogee.

A Special Place in History

The Escoe Building was more than just an office building. It was the only professional building in Muskogee's African-American district. This made it a central spot for many important activities.

A Place of Firsts

This building was home to some amazing "firsts" in Oklahoma's history. It housed the very first bank in Oklahoma owned by African-Americans. This was a huge step forward for the community.

The Escoe Building was also known as the Simmons Building. This is because it housed the Simmons Royalty Co.. This company was Oklahoma's first major oil business owned by an African-American family. Jake Simmons was a very successful businessman. His company played a big role in the oil industry.

Honored as a Historic Site

Because of its important history, the Escoe Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on July 14, 1983. The National Register lists places that are important to American history.

Sadly, the Escoe Building was torn down in 1988. Even though it's gone, its story reminds us of its important role in Muskogee's history. It shows the strength and achievements of the African-American community.
