The Esk River is an important river located in the Hawke's Bay area of New Zealand. This region is found on the eastern side of the North Island. The Esk River is one of the biggest rivers in Hawke's Bay.

It starts high up in the Maungaharuru Range, flowing south from the slopes of Mount Taraponui. Then, it turns east and reaches Hawke Bay. This is about 10 kilometres (6 mi) north of the city of Napier. A main road, State Highway 5, follows the lower part of the river for several kilometers. This road runs close to a small town called Eskdale. The river was probably named after another Esk River, which is located in southern Scotland and north-west England.

Fun on the River

The lower part of the Esk River, which is about 19 kilometres (12 mi) long, can be a great place for whitewater canoeing. However, you need to make sure the river's water level is higher than usual for a good ride.

Fishing in the Esk

If you enjoy fishing, you can find both brown and rainbow trout in the Esk River. But remember, there are rules about when and where you can fish, so it's important to check these restrictions first.

Life Around the River

The southern part of the Esk River acts like a natural border for the city of Napier. It marks the northern edge of where buildings and homes are developed.

Schools and Vineyards

Hukarere Girls' College, a well-known school for girls, is located very close to the Esk River. The valley around the Esk River is also famous for growing grapes. These grapes are used to make delicious Chardonnay and red wines.
