The Sweet Story of Eskimo Ice Cream
How Eskimo Started
Eskimo began way back in 1942. A couple named Mario Salvo and Josefina Horvilleur started the business. Josefina was the daughter of a French immigrant. They began making ice cream right from their home in Managua. It was a small family business at first.
Growing Bigger and Better
Ten years later, around 1952, their ice cream business was growing fast! To help deliver more ice cream, Mario Salvo brought in special ice cream carts. He imported half a dozen of these carts all the way from England. This helped Eskimo reach more customers.
A Time of Change
In July 1979, there was a big change in Nicaragua called the Sandinista revolution. During this time, the government took control of Eskimo. It was a period when many private companies became state-owned.
Returning to Family and Expanding
Eskimo returned to the Salvo family in the 1990s. This meant the original founders' family got their company back. After this, Eskimo started to grow even more! In 1992, Eskimo began selling its delicious ice cream in other parts of Central America.
Eskimo Today
Today, Eskimo is a very successful company. They make a huge amount of ice cream every year. They produce about 5,300 tons of ice cream! Eskimo also sends its ice cream to other countries. You can find Eskimo ice cream in Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
