The Esmond Street Historic District is a special area in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It's like a time capsule of homes built between 1884 and 1928. This district shows off beautiful old building styles, especially Colonial Revival and Queen Anne designs. In 2018, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important place to protect.

What is the Esmond Street Historic District?

A historic district is a special area with buildings that are important because of their history or architecture. The Esmond Street Historic District is a small neighborhood filled with homes. These homes were built over many years, from 1884 to 1928. They show off popular building styles from that time.

Where is Esmond Street Located?

Esmond Street is in the central part of Dorchester, a neighborhood in Boston. It's near Franklin Park, a large park in the city. Esmond Street runs mostly south from Blue Hill Avenue to Harvard Street. The street is lined with houses.

What Kind of Buildings Are There?

Most of the houses on Esmond Street are made of wood. They are either single-family homes or two-family homes. Some of these houses also have garages that were added later. The main styles you'll see are Queen Anne and Colonial Revival.

There are also three brick apartment buildings in the district. Each of these buildings has more than 20 apartments. The only non-home buildings are St. Leo's Catholic Church and its related structures. The church was built in 1902 in the Colonial Revival style. Some of its other buildings were once houses.

How Did Esmond Street Grow?

The Esmond Street area started to develop in the late 1800s. This happened partly because Franklin Park opened nearby. Franklin Park is part of Boston's "Emerald Necklace" system of parks. Harambee Park, a smaller park, is also close by.

At first, many of the people who moved to Esmond Street were Irish immigrants who were Catholic. This led to the building of St. Leo's Church. Later, in the 1920s and 1930s, Jewish families moved to Dorchester from other parts of the city.
