Espíritu Santo Cape at the eastern end of the Strait of Magellan

Espíritu Santo Cape (which means Holy Spirit Cape in Spanish) is a piece of land that sticks out into the sea. It is located in Tierra del Fuego, a large island at the southern tip of South America.

This cape is found at the eastern entrance of the famous Strait of Magellan. It is on the southern side of the strait, directly across from another important point called Punta Dungeness on the mainland.

A Special Border Point

Espíritu Santo Cape is very important because it marks the official border between two countries: Chile and Argentina.

The 1984 Treaty

In 1984, Chile and Argentina signed a special agreement called the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984 between Chile and Argentina. This treaty helped them decide where their borders were, especially in the sea.

  • The treaty states that a line drawn between Punta Dungeness and Espíritu Santo Cape shows where each country's sea areas begin and end.
  • These sea areas are called "territorial waters." They are like the part of the ocean that officially belongs to each country.

This makes Espíritu Santo Cape a key spot for understanding the geography and borders of this part of the world.
