The Esterházy torta is a famous Hungarian cake. It's a special kind of layer cake named after a real person! That person was Prince Paul III Anton Esterházy de Galántha. He lived a long time ago, from 1786 to 1866. He was an important diplomat for the Austrian Empire.

This delicious cake was first made by bakers in Budapest, Hungary, in the late 1800s. It quickly became very popular. People all over the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy loved this cake. That was a big empire in Central Europe back then.

Esterházy torta is made with several thin layers of almond meringue. Meringue is a sweet, crispy mixture made from egg whites and sugar. Between these layers, there's a creamy buttercream filling. This cream is often flavored with vanilla or other special spices.

The top of the cake has a smooth, white fondant glaze. It's decorated with a cool, spiderweb-like pattern made from chocolate. This pattern is very famous and helps you recognize the cake. Many different recipes exist for this cake. In Hungary, sometimes walnuts are used instead of almonds.

What is Esterházy Schnitten?

A popular version of this cake is called Esterházy Schnitten. This is not as common in Hungary itself. A Torta is usually round, like a traditional cake. But Schnitten are made in a square shape.

Esterházy Schnitten is often a very sweet cake. Other versions of the Esterházy cake exist too. Some are made with sponge cake layers. Others are decorated with candied fruits.
