Esther Daniel Mwaikambo is a famous doctor from Tanzania. She was born in 1940. She is a very experienced children's doctor, also known as a paediatrician. She is also a professor at the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University.

Becoming a Doctor
Esther Mwaikambo studied very hard to become a doctor. She earned her first medical degree in 1969 from the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. She made history by becoming Tanzania's very first female doctor! A Swahili newspaper called Uhuru even wrote about her in a special series.
She continued her studies to become a children's doctor. In 1977, she earned a Master of Medicine degree in Paediatrics from the University of Dar es Salaam. She also studied childhood infections and how the body fights sickness (immunology) in London in 1982. Later, in 1995, she learned about human behavior at Harvard University in the USA.
Helping Others and Leading the Way
Dr. Mwaikambo didn't just treat patients; she also helped her country in many ways. In 1987, she started the Medical Women Association of Tanzania. This group worked to help women, especially with a program to fight breast cancer.
She was also a leader in research. From 2001 to 2012, she led the Board of Research on Poverty Alleviation (REPOA). In 2009, she gave a special lecture at Harvard University. She talked about the challenges of starting a medical university in Tanzania. As the President of the Tanzania Academy of Science, Dr. Mwaikambo encouraged the media to share local scientific discoveries.
In 2018, Esther Mwaikambo was chosen as an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a very high honor!
