Esther Smith's Early Life
Esther Jones was born on December 9, 1937, in Guntown, Mississippi. Her mother worked hard as a housekeeper to support Esther and her two siblings. When Esther was 13, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois. There, Esther became very involved with her church.
She later moved in with a kind family, Mom and Dad Lockhart, who helped raise her. Esther became the lead singer for their group, The Lockhart Singers. When she turned 18, she decided to become a missionary. This meant she paused her music dreams for a while to help others.

Esther Smith's recording career officially began in 1988. Her first album, He Loves Me, was released by Sound of Gospel. She released four more albums with this label. One of these, her 1990 album Live in Concert, was very popular. It reached number 23 on Billboard magazine's Gospel Albums chart.
