Esther Smith (born December 9, 1937, as Esther Jones) is an American gospel music singer and artist. She began her music career in 1988. Her first album, He Loves Me, was released by Sound of Gospel. Since then, she has released seven more albums with different labels like A&M Records and Dorohn Records. Two of her albums have become popular enough to appear on the Billboard magazine charts, especially on the Gospel Albums chart.

Esther Smith's Early Life

Esther Jones was born on December 9, 1937, in Guntown, Mississippi. Her father left the family when Esther was very young. Her mother worked as a housekeeper to support Esther and her two siblings.

Moving to Chicago

When Esther was 13, she moved to Chicago, Illinois with her mother and siblings. There, she became very involved with her church. She later moved in with Mom and Dad Lockhart, who helped her a lot. She became the lead singer of their group, The Lockhart Singers.

Becoming a Missionary

At 18 years old, Esther decided to become a missionary. This meant she traveled to share her beliefs and help others. Because of this, she paused her music dreams for a while.

Her Music Career

Esther Smith's recording career officially started in 1988. Her first album, He Loves Me, was released by Sound of Gospel. She released four more albums with this label.

One of her albums, Live in Concert, released in 1990, became popular. It reached number 23 on the Billboard magazine Gospel Albums chart. This chart shows the most popular gospel albums in the country.
