Eta Island is a small island located in the cold region of Antarctica. It is about 2.8 kilometres (1.5 nmi) long. You can find it just north of Omega Island. Both islands are part of the Melchior Islands group, which belongs to the Palmer Archipelago.
About Eta Island
Eta Island is the biggest land feature in the northeast part of the Melchior Islands. A long time ago, a French expedition thought this island was the entire "Melchior" area. However, the name "Melchior" now refers to the whole group of islands.
Early Discoveries
In 1927, people from the Discovery Investigations roughly mapped Eta Island. These investigations were scientific trips to explore the oceans and lands around Antarctica.
How Eta Island Got Its Name
The name "Eta" comes from the seventh letter of the Greek alphabet. This name first appeared on a map in 1946. This map was made by the Argentine government. They had explored the Melchior Islands in 1942 and 1943.
