Eternity Martis is a Canadian journalist and author. She was born in Toronto, Ontario. Her first book, They Said This Would Be Fun, won an award in 2021. This book is about her experiences growing up and going to university.
Early Life and School
Eternity Martis was born in 1993. When she was young, she loved to read and write. In high school, she worked on the school newspaper.
She went to the University of Western Ontario. There, she studied English and women's studies. She also earned a certificate in writing. Later, she studied Journalism at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University).
Eternity Martis is a Black woman with mixed heritage. Her father is from Jamaica, and her mother is from Pakistan.
Writing and Teaching Career
Eternity Martis was a senior editor at Xtra Magazine. Her writing often talks about important topics like gender and race.
In March 2020, she published her first book. It is called They Said This Would Be Fun: Race, Campus Life, and Growing up. The book shares her experiences with racism while she was a student. In 2021, this book won the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize for non-fiction.
Besides writing, Martis also teaches journalism. She has held different roles at Ryerson University's School of Journalism. She was also a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia. From January to April 2022, she was the Non-Fiction Writer in Residence at the Simon Fraser University Library. In 2022, she joined Ryerson University as a full-time journalism professor.
